Promising Start to JBL

Promising start to the Junior British League

The Junior British League sees the best clubs from all over the UK come together to compete across 8 Boys divisions and 4 Girls divisions, with over 300 talented table tennis players taking part at Derby Arena.

With a new rule change for this season both the Boys and Girls sides started the year in lower divisions despite the boys winning and the girls getting safe in the last matches last year.

The girls saw Amy Mold and Anya Milne continue from last years side with Ebony Hempsell added to the side. The first match was a 4-2 win over Byng Hall from Kent with Amy and Anya both getting two wins each. Next up for the girls was Norfolk side Wensum, with the girls going down 4-2 this time Amy and Anya both picking up one a piece.  The last match of Saturday saw a 3-3 draw with Lillington, Amy coming away with her two wins. Sunday started with a 4-2 loss to top side Woodfield from the West Midlands, with the number one for Woodfield doing the damage, before the final match being a local foe in Ormesby, the match ending in a 3-3 draw with Anya taking a maximum wins and Amy one. The results see the girls in 4th place at the half way point only 1 point behind 3rd place.

Harvey McDonald, the only remaining player from last year’s wining side, was joined by Andrew McRae Jake Haygarth and Luke Mitchell. Like the girls the boys first match was vs Byng Hall and was a 3-3 with Andrew getting 2 wins and Harvey 1. Next up for the boys was Generation 2 from Southampton with the boys going down 4-2 with Harvey and Andrew getting 1 apiece. The last match of Saturday saw the boys come away winners 4-2 over Brunswick, South London.  Saturday the boys had a familiar foe in Table Tennis Daily who were in our division last year with the boys winning 5-1 with Jake Haygarth getting his first win with 2 each from Harvey and Andrew. The final match was vs top side Rotherham Scorpions who hadn’t lost all weekend with their number one having not lost a match. Harvey got the ball rolling with a win, before the Scorpions number 1 even the score. then stepped up to the plate and scored a fantastic win over a much higher ranked player before Harvey put the match to bed with a great win over the number one from Scorpions to inflict his first loss before Andrew secured the points with a win over the number 3.
